About Us

The southeastern Michigan chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC-SM) provides learning and networking opportunities for technical communicators, while supporting our parent organization, STC. STC-SM members generally live and work across southern Michigan and northern Ohio—from Jackson and Lansing to Saginaw, Flint, and Port Huron—with a majority of our members concentrated in the metro Detroit and Ann Arbor areas.

STC-SM members work in a variety of specialized professional communication roles, including experienced full-time and part-time employees, consultants and contractors, students, and others new to the field of technical communication. Our members work as technical writers, instructional designers, technical editors, business writers, usability professionals, communication managers, professors, legal writers, web developers, and more.

STC-SM Receives Pacesetter Award for Website Revamping Process

Scan of STC-SM's 2014 Pacesetter Award

May 2014. STC-SM was selected for the Pacesetter Award by STC, “for putting in place a process to redesign and maintain your website using best practices and usability testing, making future changes easier and ensuring that future leaders can continue to manage the site with minimal training.”

This was a team process. Thank you to Maryann Bowen, Elizabeth Colvin, the STC-SM Council, Mary Jo David, Pamela Finger, Sharon McDonnell, and Dave Mitropoulos-Rundus, for advice, encouragement, hard work, and sharp eyes; a special thank you to the people who came out on a very slippery snowy morning in February to be our guinea pigs as Pam led us in a card-sorting activity. Lastly, thank you to the Technical and Professional Communication program at Lawrence Tech for allowing Pam to focus her practicum activities on our website.

If you find any mistakes, blame the webmaster—hers are the last set of eyes on these pages before the readers' eyes.
