The STC-SM chapter has an elected executive administrative council that works hand-in-hand with dedicated committee managers. As a team, we run all chapter operations, support our members, maintain our website, post to social media, serve as advisors and mentors, plan and run events, and so much more! You can lend a hand for just a few hours, jump in and tackle a larger project, or make a commitment to the chapter to serve for at least a full term/year. Even if you are not a member of STC or STC-SM, we have opportunities for you to gain valuable experience and make connections.

Executive Administrative Council
The executive administrative council is empowered with primary voting authority to pursue chapter initiatives, allocate resources, plan events, and authorize financial expenditures to further the strategic objectives of the society and goals of the current president. You must be a current STC-SM member to run for an elected position on the executive administrative council.
Oversees chapter operations, sets goals for the chapter, and helps members and volunteers plan, organize, and conduct the various chapter activities. The president takes over the immediate past president position in the following chapter term.
Supports the president in all aspects of the chapter as needed and takes over the president’s role in the following chapter term.
Immediate past president
Serves as the nominations committee chair and continues to advise and support chapter-level initiatives and the goals of the current president.
Manages the chapter’s budget, funds, financial records, and all other financial operations.
Records the meeting minutes for council meetings, reminds other council members of upcoming events and meetings, maintains the council’s contact information, and archives chapter materials as needed.
The committee managers are vital to our chapter and participate in council meetings and chapter decision-making, and many of these roles can be performed remotely if you live outside of southeastern Michigan.
Maintains lists of current and prospective members, welcomes new members to the chapter, develops ideas for attracting new members, and answers questions that prospective members might have about the chapter.
Promotes chapter events and activities as well as other events in the community of interest to STC-SM chapter members. Works with the social media manager to increase public awareness of both our profession and the STC.
Social media manager
Promotes STC-SM chapter activities as well as those of the STC and other organizations on the chapter’s social media accounts. Expands the social media network and connections of STC-SM within the broader technical communication community.
Maintains and manages the STC-SM website, administers the chapter email system, explores new technologies and ideas for online resources, and helps to recruit chapter members and volunteers to create website content.
Mentoring program coordinator
Facilitates the STC-SM mentoring program and helps match prospective mentees with the best possible mentor.
Coordinates communication between STC-SM members and colleges and universities in our area.
Promotes and coordinates communications, activities, and partnerships between STC-SM members and the business community.
Identifies and invites members to run for elected positions within the chapter, and also coordinates and recruits volunteers for non-elected roles.
Greets and registers attendees at chapter events.

Add to your portfolio of work and gain a searchable byline by writing an article for our website that is of interest to technical communicators. You can write a book review, recap an event you attended, discuss software, examine trends in technical communication, or research any number of other subjects. If approved, a member of STC-SM will provide editorial feedback and publish your article on our website. Email our newsletter editor for content submissions.
