The
Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication
(STC/SM) will offer our May 2010 STC/SM Program Meeting on Wednesday,
May 26, 2010, hosted at Thomson Reuters, in Dexter, MI. The presenter
will give a talk
about being a writer: not how to do it, but what we do and why—how
being a writer has changed in terms of technology, channels, and
speed. However, the same basic skills apply. The same characteristics
apply: curiosity, a love of words. In addition, the presentation
will include video and sound clips to illustrate broader points
and include interactive discussion.
This
is an excellent opportunity to learn and think about the evolving
profession of technical writing, network with your colleagues, find
out about new member services your STC/SM council has been developing,
and hear about some highlights from the STC conference recently
completed in Dallas, TX. In addition, we will also hold a surprise
door prize giveaway at the event for attendees—win your STC/SM
T-shirt!

The
speed of change in the world is accelerating, and it can be
described as exhilarating, exciting, and at times, exhausting.
Through it all, professional communicators are there to document
the change—to describe it, to explain it, and to help
others understand and adapt to the changes. Through it all,
the tools of professional communicators have been changing:
from stone slabs to wax tablets, from quill pens to typewriters
to word processors, to Flip videos. Still it all comes back
to the basics: telling the story clearly, correctly, and compellingly.
In this month’s program, the presenter will share thoughts
on the role of the writer and why now is a good time to assess
and assert our talents and skills. The focus will be not on
how we do our jobs, but to affirm what we do and why we do
it. Feel free to share your thoughts during the presentation.

this event, we need to provide a roster to building security; if
possible, please register prior to the program by May 25, 2010,

networking opportunity, please let us know that you are coming and
if you are bringing guests. If you are unable to register in advance,
please feel free to come anyway; you will need to show ID to the
security guard to obtain a nametag and building access. |

Thomson Reuters is located in Dexter, MI, to the
West of Ann Arbor, MI, within about an hour from most locations
in southeastern Michigan.
Visitors
will come to building 3 (the two-story building with the Thomson
Reuters sign on the front of the building) and sign in. The conference
room is right across from the security desk where people sign in.
Come in to the conference room and register with the STC/SM Program
Greeter.
For
