The
Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication
(STC/SM) will offer our October 2010 STC/SM Program Meeting on Tuesday,
October 5, 2010, hosted at Washtenaw Community College, in Ann Arbor,
Michigan. The program will focus on the development of Technical
writing portfolios online, serving as the launch of the STC/SM Online
Member Portfolio service through the STC/SM website, and including
a keynote presentation by Lisa Veasey, Instructor, English/Writing
Department, Technical Writing Program Advisor, Washtenaw Community
College (WCC).
Also, the program will include awards and recognition activities
for the 2009-2010 term the chapter and a public transition of the
STC/SM Council.
This
is an excellent opportunity to learn and think about portfolio development
for technical writers, network with your colleagues, and find out
about new member services your STC/SM council has been developing.
In addition, we will also hold a surprise door prize giveaway at
the event for attendees—win your STC/SM T-shirt!
We
look forward to the possibility of seeing you in a relaxed, professional
setting, also including a catered dinner option for attendees. For
more information or if you have any other questions, visit the STC/SM
Chapter Programs webpage, or send an email to the STC/SM
Programs Manager at < programs@stc-sm.org >. To register,
send an email
to the STC/SM Registration
Coordinator at < register@stc-sm.org >. |
Program
Overview |
|
Focusing
on portfolio techniques and development, the program also
marks a formal, public transition of the STC/SM Council, including
four main parts.
—This
event will offer a catered dinner option for attendees, starting
at 6:00 PM. Buffet-style dinner option for $14: Artichoke
Chicken, seared chicken in an artichoke infused veloute sauce,
includes tossed garden salad, a vegetable medley, rice pilaf,
rolls, butter, and beverages. (Note:
The previous selection, Champagne Chicken, is no longer available.
Artichoke chicken is a very similar dish—a chicken breast
with a sauce.)
—Awards
and recognition activities for the 2009-2010 term the chapter,
including the Distinguished Chapter Service Award presentation
and formal announcement of the scholarship winner. Public
transition of STC/SM Council and introductory remarks by chapter
president Maryann Bowen.
—Overview/presentation
and launch of the STC/SM Online Member Portfolio service through
the STC/SM website, presented by Mark Lockwood, STC/SM Past
President. The STC/SM chapter is providing space through the
chapter website to all of its members, primarily for the purpose
of creating and maintaining an online portfolio for a professional
job search. With STC/SM setting up and hosting a basic site,
all you have to do is upload your resume and portfolio to
get started. Where it goes from there is up to you, depending
on your needs: you can upload text, photos, movies—whatever
you think will best show off your skills to prospective employers.
—Keynote
presentation by Lisa Veasey, Instructor, English/Writing Department,
Technical Writing Program Advisor, Washtenaw Community College
(WCC). At the end of each semester, students in Lisa’s
technical writing classes create portfolios to showcase their
semester-long projects. Students have completed this assignment
in a variety of ways, from creating web sites to preparing
ePortfolios using Adobe Acrobat 9. Lisa will share some of
her students’ past portfolios, and demonstrate how Adobe
Acrobat 9 can be used to create an ePortfolio quickly and
easily.
