Welcome to the STC Southeastern Michigan Chapter 2018-2019 program year. Fall is officially in full swing, and I want to share some highlights about our ongoing chapter initiatives and upcoming events. Over the summer, we sent a survey to all STC-SM members to gather ideas that can help us offer the most value to chapter membership. Thank you to all who participated! Member feedback and collaboration is at the heart of the STC community, and I believe it is one of the most valuable aspects of chapter membership. Please read on to learn about ways to collaborate, learn, and grow with fellow STC-SM members!
Join us on Slack
Earlier this year, we started a Slack workspace for our chapter members to share information, job postings, conferences and other events, and start conversations with one another. It has helped us to grow closer as a community and share information easily. If you are a chapter member, you have received an invite to join our Slack workspace. If you have any questions about how to join, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any STC-SM council member.
STC-SM Mentoring Program
In 2017, we observed that our chapter members had a wealth of collective experience to share with students and aspiring technical communicators, so we launched a mentoring program that pairs a seasoned technical communications professional with someone new to the field. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or if you are seeking one, learn more about the mentoring program here.
Order STC-SM Swag
We now have clothing, mugs, stationary, and other items with the STC-SM logo available for purchase through CafePress! Please visit our online shop and check out the selections. A portion of the proceeds will help support our chapter activities and initiatives.
STC Regional Technical Communication Competition
Have you produced or contributed to technical communication products that you think are worthy of awards, or would you like feedback on a project you are currently working on? We’re very excited to announce that STC-SM has teamed up with the STC West Michigan Shores (WMS) chapter to host the STC Regional Technical Communication Competition! Why enter your work in a competition? We have several reasons and information on the competition for you here. The call for entries is open until November 2, so don’t delay!
We have a number of exciting events and networking opportunities planned for the months ahead. Join us and meet your fellow chapter members in person, network, and learn from technical communication experts on a variety of topics.
October 29: Reuse and Reduce Tips for Authoring
There is still time to register for our event on October 29 at WCC in Ann Arbor, where Pushpinder Toor from PTC will discuss how reusing content cuts costs and saves time on writing, editing, publishing, and localization. Click here for more information and registration details.
November 28: Panel discussion at LTU in Southfield
Mark your calendars for part two of our “Face-to-Face vs. Remote Communication” panel discussion. Last year we had a panel of technical communication experts who engaged in an energetic discussion on the benefits and drawbacks of in-person and online communication. There were so many aspects of this multifaceted conversation that we were unable to cover in one hour, so our panelists have graciously offered to continue the conversation with us in November. Details will be coming soon!
December: Holiday mixer, virtual book club, and more!
Stay tuned for information about some networking and virtual events we have planned for the chilly month of December. If you can’t make it to our holiday mixer, you can still attend virtual events from the comfort of home.
If you have any questions about the STC-SM chapter, upcoming events, or if would like to volunteer with our chapter, please feel free to email me or any STC-SM council member. We would love to hear from you!
