It’s that time of year again! Fall is upon us, so it’s back to school and time to kick off the STC-SM program year. Our first virtual coffee meetup of the fall will be held on Wednesday, September 11 from 12–1 p.m. EST on Zoom! Grab your favorite beverage or your lunch and join STC-SM members to discuss tech comm, STC, chapter events, and more! This is a great way to network with other technical communicators across southeastern Michigan in a relaxing and peaceful setting. We hope you will join us!

STC-SM will be hosting its first virtual coffee meet-up on Tuesday, December 18 from 7–9 AM! We will be using a new channel in our Slack workspace called coffee_club to initiate a phone call. Join us to discuss STC, STC-SM, technical communication, industry trends, or whatever else may come up! The facilitator will initiate the call at 7AM, but feel free to join at any point during the two-hour timeframe—for as little or long as you like! On Wednesday, March 21, we met at Lawrence Technological University for our program Clear and Simple. Our speaker, Ed Lanigan, spoke on how clarifying information and presenting it in a simple way improves our ability to communicate with our readers and creates better customer experiences. Ed has more than 20 years of multi-industry experience focused on customer experience, service performance, and six-sigma continuous improvement, and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to hear him speak.
This thought-provoking discussion detailed the process of implementing a company-wide strategy for designing and using standardized letter templates that not only improved internal processes by slimming down unnecessary communication but also improved the content of the letters by providing a set of guidelines for writers. With the use of a standardized template, employees in different sections of the company could customize communication to clients while maintaining company branding and ensuring that the information the reader needed to know was visible and well-designed.
